On April 15, 2020, the Wilson Center Africa Program and its Sudans Working Group (SWG), in partnership with the Wilson Center Middle East Program, held a private Ground Truth Briefing on “One Year After Bashir: Ground Truth Briefing on Sudan.”

On April 15, 2020, the Wilson Center Africa Program and its Sudans Working Group (SWG), in partnership with the Wilson Center Middle East Program, held a private Ground Truth Briefing on “One Year After Bashir: Ground Truth Briefing on Sudan.” Congresswoman Jane Harman, Director, President, and CEO of the Wilson Center offered introductory remarks, and Mr. Michael Morrow,Senior Diplomatic Fellow, Wilson Center Africa Program, moderated the event. The teleconference featured U.S. Special Envoy for Sudan Ambassador Donald E. Booth and Sudanese-American human rights activist Ms. Azaz Elshami, and was attended by nearly 70 members of the Sudans Working Group including policymakers, practitioners, experts, and other stakeholders.
The discussion focused on the state of play in Sudan one year after the removal of Omar al-Bashir from power. Participants discussed U.S. support for the transitional government; successes and obstacles in achieving the demands of the protestors who drove al-Bashir from power; and the current governance, economic, and human rights situation in Sudan. Participants discussed some of the key challenges facing Sudan and the transitional government, including accountability measures, economic reform, human rights protections, security sector abuses and reform, and constitutional changes. Participants also considered how different international actors are approaching the situation in Sudan, and the potential implications of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The event provided a timely opportunity to assess progress to date in Sudan, and take measure of what further efforts are needed to help the transitional government and the Sudanese people as they continue to work toward building a free, secure, and just state.
Through the Sudans Working Group, the Africa Program provides a platform for engaging U.S., African, and international policymakers and stakeholders in inclusive and forward-leaning dialogue aimed at advancing the prospects for peace, security, and development between and within the Sudans.
