General Glen D. VanHerck (ret.) joins the Canada Institute's Advisory Board

WASHINGTON – The Wilson Center is pleased to announce that General Glen D. VanHerck (ret.), 9th Commander of the United States Northern Command (USNORTHCOM) and 26th Commander of the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) has joined the Canada Institute's Advisory Board.

"Global insecurity and new threats make the security partnership between the United States and Canada more important than ever. General VanHerck knows this first-hand with a distinguished military career that earned him deep respect in both countries. The Wilson Center's Canada Institute will benefit tremendously from his strategic insight and wise counsel as we increase our focus on continental defense research," said Canada Institute Director Christopher Sands. 

Gen. VanHerck served as Commander of USNORTHCOM, which conducts homeland defense, civil support and security cooperation to defend and secure the United States and its interests, and NORAD, which is responsible for aerospace warning, aerospace control and maritime warning in the defense of North America, from 2020 to 2024. Prior to his final assignment, Gen. VanHerck was the Director, Joint Staff, the Pentagon, Arlington, Virginia. In this role, he assisted the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in his role as advisor to the President and Secretary of Defense, coordinated and directed the activities of the Joint Staff in support of the Chairman and served as the Staff Inspector General.

He is a graduate of the University of Missouri and was commissioned through the Reserve Officer Training Corps program. His background includes staff tours at Air Combat Command, Air Force Global Strike Command, and United States Strategic Command. He also served as the Vice Director of Strategy, Plans, and Policy (J5) at the Joint Staff, and the Vice Director of the Joint Staff.
