The global threat environment has changed drastically since the release of "Strong, Secure, Engaged," which outlined the Canadian Government's long-term defense strategy in 2017. Five years on, Canada's military is mired in longstanding procurement challenges, high-level sexual misconduct scandals, and aging equipment in need of replacement or repair. 

In the second instalment of Thinking Canada, Canada Institute Global Fellow Richard Sanders provides a snapshot of Canada's defense posture and an outline of the challenges Ottawa faces at home and abroad, including Russian belligerence in Eastern Europe, China's conduct in the Indo-Pacific, and the obsoletion of detection systems by hypersonic weapons.
