WASHINGTON – The Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars is pleased to announce a new Brazil-United States Dialogue on Sustainability and Climate Change in partnership with the Concertação Pela Amazônia, a network of Brazilian individuals, civil society organizations, and companies dedicated to promoting sustainable development in the Amazon region.

The issue of the environment and climate change is at the forefront of the global agenda, and Brazil and the United States—the two largest democracies in the Western Hemisphere, both agricultural and energy powerhouses—remain critical actors in this debate.

In recognition of the value of sustained society-to-society dialogue between Brazil and the United States on these issues, the Wilson Center and the Concertação have formed a bilateral working group composed of stakeholders interested making a difference through collaboration on innovative and forward-looking solutions.

The objective is to create a neutral, trusted space that brings together communities of practice across sectors, so that environmental experts, policy leaders, civil society representatives, scientists, and the business community can engage in constructive dialogue and identify actions and policy options to enhance environmental preservation and sustainability.

“Climate and sustainability are of domestic and international importance for Brazil, and this initiative provides a platform for important groups within Brazilian society to engage in dialogue with their U.S. counterparts,” says Ambassador Thomas A. Shannon, Jr., Co-Chair of the Brazil Institute Advisory Council.

Specific topics to be addressed by the working group include: the economic impact of biodiversity and forest conversation; developments in sustainable agriculture; renewable energy; green finance; multilateral and international cooperation; and the potential of Brazil-U.S. trade.

The Working Group will meet quarterly, with roundtable discussions among forty to fifty specialists. The Working Group will be led by a board of high-level members of Concertação pela Amazônia and their U.S. counterparts; these leaders will also meet at regular intervals to manage and coordinate the agenda.

Within the Wilson Center, this initiative is being led by the Brazil Institute, with the support of its Latin American Program and Environmental Change and Security Program.
